Tyree Johnson — Founder, Instructor, Drummer.
Tyree Johnson, known throughout Kansas City as “Tyree the Drummer,” brings more than 20 years of professional drumming experience, performance knowledge and teaching experience to KCDA — plus formal training in music theory and composition.
Tyree Johnson's story begins on a church mother's lap.
He was two years old — one of many young drummers in the congregation, with no guarantee of ever getting a turn. But one of the mothers saw something in him. She pulled him close, placed his small hands on the drums, and showed him the way. That single act of belief became the foundation everything else was built on.
It carried him to the Paseo Academy of Fine Arts, where legendary jazz educator Russell Davis sharpened his gift and introduced him to Kansas City's deep jazz tradition. By 15, he'd already launched his first professional trio. By adulthood, he was a fixture at The Blue Room and The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art — drummer-in-residence for the legendary Lonnie McFadden Quartet, an ArtsKC Inspiration Grant recipient, and a three-time Guitar Center Drum-Off district winner.
But the career was never the point. The point was always the community.
Tyree founded Kansas City Drum Academy inside the historic Mutual Musicians Foundation at 18th & Vine — the same sacred ground that gave the world Charlie Parker and Count Basie — to give Kansas City youth the same thing that changed his life: someone who sees them, believes in them, and hands them the sticks.
When COVID forced KCDA to close, he refused to walk away. In 2026, he relaunched with everything he had — and his youth drumline took the stage inside Arrowhead Stadium during the FIFA World Cup, introducing Kansas City's next generation to the entire world.
Every young drummer who walks through the doors of the Mutual Musicians Foundation today is walking into something bigger than drum lessons. They're being seen by someone who knows exactly what it means to be seen for the first time.
Building Drummers. Building Character. Building Legacy.
That's not a tagline. It's an open invitation — and the first beat is free.
